The Cardinal team has lots of talent on their roster, a history of resilience, and they (the whole team) believes in themselves—a necessary make up to winning ball games.

Orville Hodge, the unknown baseball player (http://amzn.to/ktuge9), had an uphill battle to prove his worth to be a hero with the Cincinnati Redlegs. And did the fans ever cheer when he put the ball in the seats in the bottom of the 9th inning for a decisive win.

And so I'm looking forward to some exciting baseball from the St. Louis Cardinals in 2012. Good luck team as you gather in Florida to prepare for the opening season. I can't wait to get back to Busch Stadium with all the other Cardinal fans.

Chicago Cubs—Prince Fielder—Orville Hodge?

Former Milwaukee Brewer first baseman is now a Detroit Tiger. He rarely misses a game during the regular season, and even though he is stocky built and doesn't win many record plays at first base, his bat is seriously something to reckon with. Good luck Prince Fielder.

Meanwhile, as the Cubs rebuild their 2012 roster with a bunch of AAA players, I'm not sure it will be enough to cheer die hard Cub fans. Traditionally, and I've been a Cub fan for over 30 years, everything looks good on paper but doesn't always match up in their performance on the field. May be that's why baseball fans don't see them in the World Series. And what about Prince Fielder? Did they overlook him and his bat as a good offensive move for the Cub team?

When Orville Hodge, the unknown baseball player (http://amzn.to/ktuge9), joined the Cincinnati Redlegs, he was overlooked and kept the bench warm thought out most of the season. Then one day, in a do or die situation, he became a hero among baseball fans everywhere.

Surprises!!! I hope this is a year of surprises with the Chicago Cubs. And who knows, perhaps they will be 2012 World Series champions. Surely, Wrigley Field along with all of Chicago will go crazy.

The Will to Believe

In today's fast paced society most people think that to reach the top of the success ladder depends on their own efforts to succeed. And yes, that is partially true.

But Tim Tebow, Denver Bronco quarterback, mentioned in his book another important element—the will to believe in yourself. "A strong will to believe motivates a player to give it his best and win foot ball games," he thought.

The St. Louis Cardinals became the 2011 World Series Champions. No baseball fan in his right mind ever thought that during the regular season they would even make it to the playoffs not to mention the World Series. But with a strong will to believe in themselves, they out performed their opponents. Good job Cardinals.

With a strong will to believe in himself, Orville Hodge, the average kid on the block, over came many obstacles in his life to become a hero with the Cincinnati Redlegs (http://amzn.to/ktuge9) baseball team. And this was an unknown guy from out of no where.

So I am convinced that there are no excuses in life. With the confidence to have a strong will to believe in yourself, financially, socially, and spiritually, you can be successful, and that is a powerful thought.

The New Cincinnati Redleg

Christmas time is here again. It reminds me of my grandma's home cooking and the chance to get cozy by the fireplace and read a good book.
Good books! Among my favorites are "The Litigators" by John Grisham, "The Power of a Whisper" by Bill Hybels, and "Write-A-Thon: Write your book in 26 days and live to tell about it" by Rochelle Melander.
And I can't forget to mention my own, "The Unknown Baseball Player" a delightful story about the average person who rides above circumstances to fulfill his dream. A story that normally retails for $14.99 is now available for only 99 cents in the Kindle store on Amazon (http://amzn.to/ktuge9). Read the sample below and get your copy for Christmas.

..."Ladies and gentlemen. This is your captain speaking. In just a few minutes we will be landing at Lunkin Municipal Airport. The weather in Cincinnati is sunny and clear. The temperature is seventy-six degrees with a mild breeze. There's lot's to see in Cincinnati, so enjoy your visit. We hope you had a pleasant flight and thank you for flying United"...
After sounding his horn the bright yellow taxicab with the checkered trim was moving away from the curb and weaving through all the other cars toward the highway. "Where to, Mister?"...
The wheels squeaked on Hilda's blue Chevy when she abruptly cut into the right lane, thus allowing her to pass the little yellow bubble. And when Andy turned his head to look at the speeding vehicle, he noticed four stoic elderly school teachers enjoying the ride...
Outside, the boy from Indiana paused to gaze at the huge structure. Goose bumps ran down his spine, as he couldn't take his eyes off the big sign: River Front Stadium.
Read more about "The Unknown Baseball Player." http://amzn.to/ktuge9

A recent friend wrote, "David enjoyed reading about the unknown baseball player so much that he couldn't wait to share it with his friends. And in these hard times I'm so grateful to Amazon for making it available as a nice Christmas gift for only 99 cents."
Molly Stone from Arkansas.

Thanksgiving & Baseball

Yes! In spite of hard times, several major league baseball teams are looking for new managers.

Robin Ventura will be the 2012 new White Sox manager, replacing Ozzie Guillen.

The Chicago Cubs, St. Louis Cardinals, and Boston Red Sox have yet to choose a manager for 2012. Now the front office is looking for his replacement.
Many names have come up on John Mozeliak's (Cardinal GM) lists of managerial candidates—Matheny, Sandberg, Francona, and Oquendo to mention only a few.
What concerns me is that John Mazeliak will have such a long lists to choose from that the wrong candidate may be selected. I suggest that the GM pick the best 3 from his lists, and go from there in his decision. Yes, selecting La Russa's replacement is an awesome task. Good luck John Mozeliak. Cardinal fans are behind you in picking the best candidate for the job.

St Louis Cardinals—2011 World Series Champions

The 2011 baseball season was an up and down roller coaster for the Cardinals. No one, sport fans in their right mind, ever thought the Cardinals would ever qualify to be WS champions in 2011.

After beating the Philadelphia Phillies and Milwaukee Brewers, they went on to excite baseball fans around the world. And this was a wild card team whose fate wasn't decided upon until a couple of days before the regular baseball season ended.

Through seven games, more ups and downs, the St. Louis Cardinals earned the title to be called the 2011 World Series champions. And they deserved it.

Congratulations St. Louis Cardinals. And may you enjoy your celebration tomorrow, Sunday, November 30, 2011 with a parade in St Louis with lots of deserving St Louis Cardinal fans and at Busch Stadium.

The Mighty St. Louis Cardinals

October 22, 2011. Game 3. World Series.
It was like a football score that brought lots of excitement to baseball fans everywhere.
9 innings of baseball kept the crowd sitting on the edge of their seats until the final out was made. And it was a Cardinal victory 16—7.
But the thing that stood up most in my mind was Albert Pujols. No where else in baseball have I seen so much power demonstrated in a single game with 3 home runs and 6 runs to add to the final score. Only Prince Fielder with the Milwaukee Brewers would probably come close with so much power at the plate.
And the rest of the Cardinal team didn't sit back either—Freeze, Haliday, Furcal, Berkman, Theriot, Molina, Jay, and Craig, all demonstrated that the Cardinals were a team to play seriously against.
It was a job well done, and even though the Texas Rangers are an awesome team with 13 hits and 7 runs in last night's game, the Cardinals are to be congratulated.
As I sit back in my easy chair and reflect over some exciting moments in baseball, sometimes I wish I, Marvin Ferguson (http://amzn.to/kttuge9) were out there on the baseball field playing my heart out.
And good luck Cardinals. Game 4 is tonight.

St. Louis Cardinals vs. Philadelphia Phillies, Game 5

The St Louis Cardinals played like champions in game 5 beating the Philadelphia Phillies 1—0.

Berkman, Pujols, Theriot, Molina, along with the rest of the team did their best to stay alive and take the team to Milwaukee for the final stretch before they go on to play in the world series.

I think Carpenter did an excellent job mixing up his pitches to confuse the batters through eight innings of play. His pitching style kept the Cardinal infield busy as they remained mentally alert fielding many grounders.

But if there was an MVP award for game 5 it must go to Rafael Furcal. In addition to his fielding at shortstop, he got Cardinal fans excited in the top of the first inning with a triple that eventually brought him home with the only Cardinal game winning run.

I can't wait to watch the Cardinal-Brewer game this Sunday (October 9, 2011) in Milwaukee. ALDS. A #rookie allowed 2 runs and beat the #Texas #Rangers. Matt Moore could do nothing wrong and the fans loved it.

The bases are loaded in the top of the ninth inning and the game is tied. The manager looks at his bench of slim pickings. Stumped, he sees Orville, the unknown #baseball player (http://amzn.to/ktuge9) sitting at the other end of the bench. History says that successful people, leaders, must follow the status quo. Not so!!!

In the movie Moneyball, Oakland A's general manager, Billy Beane shows us how it's done.

High salaries doesn't always equal good championship baseball players. With access to statistical data on the computer, Billy proved that performance far out weighs money. And defying the odds, the Oakland A's general manager set out to demonstrate just that.

In The Unknown Baseball Player (http://amzn.to/ktuge9), Orville Hodge didn't have much money either with a contract with The Cincinnati Redlegs when he hit a grand slam home run. Still the average guy became an overnight hero to a lot of fans.

Billy Beane is the kind of guy that I want on my team. Somebody who isn't afraid to make decisions, think on his feet, and be persistent.

I enjoyed watching Moneyball so much I wanna see it again. Blinking lights on a theater stared at a coffee shop across the street. Flickering lights shining through Paul Revere lenses on lamp posts cast a shadow on the brick pavement.

Woodstock, Illinois is my back yard. Often, with family, I would visit the shops and stop to chat with the people. It was real southern small town hospitality.

When Hollywood picked Woodstock to film Ground Hog Day I was thrilled. As I watched the movie on my DVD player I could easily identify all the locations.

Phil Connors (Bill Murray) is at his best in this Romantic Comedy about a weatherman caught in a personal time trap.

Phil Connors is a supernatural hero. He caught a boy falling out of a tree. He told a man choking on a piece of steak to get some sharper teeth after performing the H..maneuver. He carved out ice figures with a chain saw. There wasn't anything he couldn't do. And movie fans loved it.

Like Phil Connors, Orville Hodge is a real hero. The Unknown Baseball Player (http://amzn.to/ktuge9) brought Cincinnati Redleg fans to their feet when he hit a home run to break a tie baseball game in the 9th inning. And he did what Orville always does best: focus on what you can do and not on what you can't.

With a bowl of pop corn and some soda, I could watch this movie all day. Thank goodness for DVD.

The Power Of Averaging

The math teacher stood at the blackboard and asked the class for an AVERAGE on a given set of numbers. Then, more than a dozen hands signaled for attention.

When I wanted to enhance my investment portfollio, I was told that buying/selling financial securites daily was not a good way to grow MONEY.

My intention was to grow $5,000. But his philosophy on, focus on what you can do not what you can't, was his ticket to playing baseball with the Cincinnati Redlegs.

There's an old saying that says it all AVERAGES out in the end. Like Orville, make wise choices in your life and you will be surprised.

Courage—Marine Sgt. Dakota Meyer

COURAGE is often taken for granted. Still, whether they are conscious of it or not, people perform courageous acts every day.

What is COURAGE? Even I had to look it up in a dictionary to clarify its meaning.

COURAGE is the ability to face danger, difficulty, uncertainty, or pain, without being overcome by FEAR, or being DEFLECTED from a chosen course of ACTION.

Wow! Does that give me a lot to think about. How about you?

Watching the FOX NEWS NETWORK I saw PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA give SGT. DAKOTA MEYER the distinguished MEDAL OF HONOR, the highest military award, in the WHITE HOUSE before a well respected audience.

Who is MARINE SGT. DAKOTA MEYER?

On September 8, 2009, in a remote province in eastern Afghanistan, MARINE SGT. DAKOTA MEYER raced into a "killing zone," and rescued 36 US and Afghan troops. He displayed a lot of COURAGE.

In response to receiving the highest military honor in the land, he said that he was no hero, just doing his duty. I think it displayed his true Christian character.

We must thank our military (USA) who sacrifice daily to help preserve AMERICAN FREEDOM that we all enjoy.

COURAGE is a buzz word that stretches its characteristics throughout the world.

Remember the lion in The Wizard of Oz? He was desperately searching for some COURAGE. Did you ever see a lion who was afraid?

Orville Hodge in The Unknown Baseball Player (http://amzn.to/ktuge9) possessed enough COURAGE to overcome the obstacles of traditionalism and criticism. Without it he would never have fulfilled his passion to become a major league baseball player.

COURAGE is innate and must be used wisely throughout a person's life.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://cornerlotsbaseball.blogspot.com/2011/09/couragemarine-sgt-dakota-meyer.html' title='Courage—Marine Sgt. Mitt Romney shared with television viewers a few weeks ago, his 69 page job and economic plan.

His views make good sense to a lot of people. A critical structural adjustment rather than short term fixers is necessary.

Whenever I hear the word health care or jobs I know a presidential election is just around the corner.

What ever happened to work? Did the supply and demand theory go out the window?

Sure, every body can agree with reducing taxes, spending, and government regulations. But when Gov. Mitt Romney talked about FAIR TRADE and mentioned China as a major contributor to the problem I perked up.

For decades China has deflected market value of its products in order to gain an edge in the global economy. It sounds like the playing field is not even.

But what is a playing field?

It could be a physical location where a group of people play baseball.

In principle it could be a set of rules or policy of a company that is universally accepted. I have worked for different companies in my life time that have a different set of rules for every employee in the company, and I hate that. It's a losing battle.

Baseball players perform all the time under a set of rules. Read THE UNKNOWN BASEBALL PLAYER (http://amzn.to/ktuge9).

Mitt Romney is right when he says FAIR TRADE is essential for a stable economy.

Commercial Waste?!

Television provides a great way to relax after a hard days work. And I always enjoy watching a good program.

From the days of black and white TV on a tiny screen to living color symbolized by the NBC peacock, from I Love Lucy to Jay Leno, millions of people stay glued to their TV sets.

It doesn't take much to get me interested in a TV show. But commercial interruptions make me mad. Why? Because most of them say absolutely nothing about the product or service.

Look at the following scenarios:
"We wanted to save money for__college education, so we taught him how to dunk..." That darn green lizard drives me crazy.
"We've been selling 'Gold' for over sixty years..." That man in the executive suit makes it sound so easy.
"Ford...we have a BIG SELECTION right here on our lot...so come on down..."
The sales clerk didn't know anything about the product. All they could do was direct traffic to a specific area of the store or the check out counter.

Shopping is a relative term. So consumers must do their homework.

If you are looking for a car I suggest you read a Consumer Report. Google. Talk to other people.

Looking for an insurance policy? Get a sample copy of the policy and have it notarized by an insurance company representative.

Maybe you're looking for a good book. (http://amzn.to/ktuge9) Look at the review and description summary. Read other peoples comments about the book. Notice the ranking—how many stars does it have? Check it out at your local library. Maybe it's a 99 cent ebook bargain on Amazon.

I don't know anything about Gold investments. I'd have to do a lot of research. Perhaps find an expert who could walk me through all the jargon.

We live in THE INFORMATION AGE with easy access to computers. So consumer, don't get stuck with empty promises. Do your research.

Rodger Federer—US Open—2011

The US OPEN (2011) is over for another year and what a thrill it was. A pyramid of champion tennis players entertained thousands of fans for two weeks in Flushing Meadows, New York (USA).

Rounds 1, 2, 3, 4, and so on. Through a process of elimination a lists of champions—Roddick, Blake, Nadal, Djokovic, Williams, Wozniacki, Stosur, and more, gave tennis fans the thrill of a life time.

Tennis is a fast moving game that requires a lot of skill mentally to follow a ball and keep their eye on their opponent.

But among the celebrities, Rodger Federer is my favorite. He's currently ranked number 3 and a 5 time US OPEN winner among victories in Austrian, Wimbledon, and other places. Surely, no body can deny it, he's a real champion (http:amzn.to/ktuge9).

I get pumped up when I watch Roger play. He has an excellent serve and challenges his opponents with a lot of aces.

Rodger has very good hand to eye coordination. He has creative use of his hand and wrist that puts a lot of finesse in his shots. MOST IMPORTANT he's able to place the ball perfectly any where on the court.

How did he develop the style to play like a champion? As a child he developed an interest in any thing that involved a ball. And second, he played a lot of badminton that helped him learn how to place the ball and enhance his mental capability. Good for you, Rodger, you are well loved by lots of tennis fans.

I don't want to diminish the efforts of the entire roster of tennis players at the 2011 US OPEN. They worked hard, played like champions (http://amzn.to/ktuge9), and deserve to be congratulated.

CONGRATULATIONS !

We Remember 9/11

September 11. 2001 was a devastating day in American History. Pennsylvania. New York. Washington DC. Three airplanes crash into designated targets. A fourth air plane was aborted in a field.

Over 3000 people died—many victims and people who sacrificially gave their life to help.

The lost left a huge impact on many families and friends. Children will grow up without a mother, father, or both. Some kids never had the chance to grow up and live a full life on this earth. And many did or are still experiencing long term medical treatment.

But why? Why this tragedy?

LISA BEAMER, Todd Beamer widow, sums it all up best. "We must learn from this tragedy and MOVE ON.

Orville Hodge in The Unknown Baseball Player (http://amzn.to/ktuge9) experienced some of the same losses. His dad died when he was a child. Orville nearly died in a car accident. He was the object of bullying from his peers. And in spite of devastating losses, Orville MOVED ON and became a baseball player with the Cincinnati Redlegs.

I'm Marvin Ferguson, author of The Unknown Baseball Player. Losses never came easy to me. My dad died when I was only 2 years old. I never had a dad to share a boys imminent passions with. I never knew what it would be like to go fishing with a dad or to a baseball game. I envied my friends always talking about doing something with their dad. But even though it wasn't always easy, I learned to adjust and MOVE ON.

LISA BEAMER is right. Even though losses are painful we must learn to MOVE ON. And some day, in God's presence we will learn why this tragedy happened.

Passion For The Needy

Among all of the John Grisham books I've read, The Street Lawyer is my favorite.

Michael Brock is making BIG money as a lawyer relentlessly rising to the top of Drake & Sweeny, a giant DC law firm.

But in an instant, his life is changed. A homeless man takes nine lawyers hostage in the firms plush offices. When it is all over, the man's blood is splattered on Michael's face.

Rediscovering his conscience, Michael leaves the BIG times for the streets where his attacker once lived. The homeless are society's powerless whom desperately need an advocate for justice.

With only the clothes on their back, a meal at a local mission, and no money, surely the homeless are the outcast of society.

With a passion for the needy, Michael Brock sets out to change the justice system for the homeless.

Like the homeless, Orville Hodge was born on the wrong side of the railroad tracks. Steeped in family tradition, his goal to become a major league baseball player looked impossible. With constant demands to work on the farm he was always criticized. He could never do anything right.

Could Orville Hodge over come his circumstances to fulfill his dream like so many other people?

John Grisham's book The Street Lawyer just like The Unknown Baseball Player is a must read.

Do you feel like your stuck somewhere in your life? Read about Orville's life and learn how you can over come your own circumstances.(http://amzn.to/ktuge9).

Success The Old Fashion Way

Where do successful people come from?

I thought successful people are born with a silver spoon in their mouth. Do you know what I mean? Here are some popular scenarios I jotted down:

1. Born into a wealthy family.
2. Know important people in high places.
3. Be a Harvard Grad.
4. Be in the right place at the right time.
5. And the lists goes on...

As you brainstorm the lists are your brain cells spinning? Has it really got you thinking?

I'm a self-published author with two baseball books and a third now being considered by a leading publishing house. Through hard work and determination The Unknown Baseball Player is now an ebook (http://amzn.to/ktuge9) for many readers to enjoy.

To catapult my mood swings to the top, I recently read Outliners by Malcolm Cladwell. This book set me into a different direction. Surely success is just around the corner.

Outliners talks about who successful people are—their culture, family, experiences, and more.

Yes! I am convinced that you can be successful if you wanna be.

Through blood sweat and tears I am a successful author. I wrote The Unknown Baseball Player which is now available as an ebook for 99 cents (http://amzn.to/ktuge9). Boys On The Gold Coast another 99 cent ebook will be available in November 2011. Surely, they are a delightful read for the young and old alike.

So remember folks. You can be successful. You can be whatever you wanna be. Don't let any body tell you different. And while your at it, read Outliners. It will give you a lot to think about.

The Success of Independent Authors

God loves independent authors. They are the future of the book selling industry. BIG changes lay ahead for self-published authors.

Certain bookstores and publishing houses still focus on traditional ways to print and sell books.

People laughed at Henry Ford riding down the street in his horseless carriage. Actually some people were scared. A mix master salesman created the McDonald's enterprise. How could that be? Apple, Microsoft, IBM, and others enhanced the use of computers which has made revolutionary changes in life styles throughout the world.

Yes! Electronics is the wave of the future.

In July of 2010, Amazon reported that ebooks were outselling hard cover books nearly two to one. Why? Because they are cheaper, environmentally friendly, don't require a trip to the bookstore, can be downloaded in seconds, are free of postage, and you can literally carry hundreds of them on an airplane without adding an ounce of weight.

Plain and simple, there has never been a better time in history for a self-published author to compete against the BIG gals and guys. I use to purchase a Coke for 10 cents, ride the streetcar for a dime, purchase some chewing gum for a nickel, and fill the gas tank in my car for $2.00. But not today. But I can read my entire book: The Unknown Baseball Player on Kindle or PC or iPad...for only 99 cents.

In today's economy with high unemployment and inflation, how can you beat a better deal?

Owners of ebook readers are a dedicated group found all over the world. After having spent hundreds of dollars to acquire Kindle or Nook or iPad, they are eager to load up their electronic libraries with great books. And never before in history have a major group of book buyers been more willing to take a chance on books written by self-published authors. Now they have a reason to sample a good book because 99 cents is an afterthought! This group of readers understands something most publishing houses and bookstores have forgotten: Every bestselling author in the world was at one time—a non published author.

So bargains are everywhere. Right now, The Unknown Baseball Player is available for only 99 cents on Amazon. Check it out: http://amzn.to/ktuge9. My second book Boys On The Gold Coast another ebook for 99 cents will be available in November of this years (2011).

So book lovers, enjoy a good ebook at an affordable price (99 cents).

"The Natural" and "The Unknown Baseball Player"

Roy Hobbs (Robert Redford) in "The Natural." wanted to fulfill a boyhood dream of baseball stardom. Finally, with his boyhood bat, he led the New York Knights to a pennant victory and the fulfillment of his dream.
Like Roy Hobbs, Orville was a hard working farm boy who worked hard to overcome obstacles in his life to eventually play baseball with the Cincinnati Redlegs.
